Driver Privacy Policy

Current terms and privacy information for Travo customers and drivers in Uganda.

Last updated: 2 November 2026

This policy explains how Travo handles personal data about drivers and fleet partners using the Travo Driver app and related driver services in Uganda. The Platform is operated under the Travo name by GICT Technologies Africa (“Travo”, “we”, “us”, or “our”). It is intended to be read alongside our Terms and Conditions and any separate driver or fleet agreement that applies to you.

Privacy contact: privacy@travo.ug. For driver, trip, or account support, contact app@travo.ug.

1. People and services covered

This policy applies when you apply to become a driver, create or use a driver account, upload onboarding documents, go online, receive or complete a booking, use driver support, or participate in a fleet arrangement managed through Travo. Where a fleet manager is involved, that organisation may separately explain how it uses information for its own employment or fleet-management purposes.

2. Personal data we may collect

  • Account and contact data: name, phone number, email, profile image, account identifiers, preferred language, sign-in provider details, verification status, and emergency contact details if supplied.
  • Identity and eligibility documents: national or other identity document details and images, driving licence, permits, verification results, and relevant expiry dates. We request documents needed to confirm eligibility and meet applicable requirements.
  • Vehicle and service data: vehicle registration and plate number, vehicle type, make or model, insurance and inspection details, service category, vehicle photographs, and approval status.
  • Precise location: GPS coordinates, location timestamps, speed or heading where made available by the device, and route or trip progress. When you go online, the app may collect location in the background to show your availability, match you to nearby bookings, and support an active trip. Location collection normally stops when you go offline, subject to a short technical delay or a trip/support record already created.
  • Trip, performance, and earnings data: booking offers, acceptance or rejection, pickup and destination, route and timestamps, trip completion or cancellation, fares, commission or fees shown under your arrangement, wallet and payout records, ratings, incentive eligibility, and support or safety reports.
  • Device, app, and security data: device model and operating system, app version, IP or network information, push token, sign-in/session or device identifiers, diagnostic events, crash/error reports where enabled, and records used to protect accounts and investigate abuse.
  • Communications and reports: messages to support, documents or information you submit, customer feedback, incident reports, and records of calls or messages where the channel makes them available to Travo.
  • Payment data: payout destination details such as a mobile-money number, wallet and earnings ledger, transaction status and reference. Payment partners may handle credentials directly under their own privacy notices.
  • Information from others: customers, fleet managers, identity or document-verification providers, payment providers, sign-in providers, regulators, or lawful public sources may provide information relevant to a booking, verification, payment, complaint, or safety review.

3. How and why we use data

  • Review your application, verify identity and driver eligibility, approve a driver and vehicle, and manage your account.
  • Show your online availability and approximate current position to dispatch systems so you can receive relevant booking offers.
  • Share trip-related identity, vehicle, contact, and location information with a customer when needed to coordinate and complete an accepted trip.
  • Provide navigation, trip status, customer support, safety assistance, fare calculation, earnings records, wallet services, and payouts.
  • Maintain service quality, investigate complaints and incidents, enforce platform rules, prevent fraud, protect accounts, and address unsafe or unlawful conduct.
  • Send essential account, booking, security, support, and payment communications and, where permitted, driver programme or promotional information.
  • Operate, troubleshoot, measure, and improve the driver app, dispatch, mapping, and service reliability.
  • Comply with legal, regulatory, tax, accounting, insurance, law-enforcement, and court obligations, and establish or defend legal claims.

4. Legal grounds and choices

Under Uganda's Data Protection and Privacy Act, 2019 and its regulations, we collect and process personal data for stated and lawful purposes, and take steps to keep it relevant and protected. Depending on the activity, processing is necessary to assess your application or perform our driver service arrangement, comply with a legal obligation, protect a person's vital interests, or pursue a legitimate operational interest such as account security, safety, dispatch, and fraud prevention. Where the law requires consent, we ask for it; you may withdraw consent, although this may prevent a feature or driver service that depends on it.

5. Background location and online status

Location is central to driver dispatch. When you switch to online/available, the app may use your device location in the background so the Platform can show your availability, calculate proximity to a customer, send nearby booking offers, and update the location associated with an accepted trip. Your location may be shared with the customer for the accepted trip and with authorised Travo operations staff for support or safety.

Switch offline to stop ordinary availability and dispatch location sharing. You can also revoke location permission in your device settings, but the app may then be unable to make you available or provide navigation and trip progress. A location update can take time to stop after switching offline due to connectivity or device operating-system behaviour; already recorded trip and safety records may remain under the retention rules below. The app does not use driver location for unrelated advertising.

6. How we share data

  • Customers: when a booking is matched or accepted, customers may see your display name, driver rating, approved vehicle details, contact method, and trip-related live location or progress needed to identify and meet you.
  • Fleet managers: if your account is linked to a fleet, authorised fleet personnel may see information needed for fleet operations, such as your account and vehicle status, trip activity, performance, or earnings. The exact access depends on the fleet setup and agreement.
  • Service providers: hosting and cloud storage, maps and geocoding, SMS/email and push delivery, identity/document verification, authentication, diagnostics, customer support, and payment providers. They receive information needed to provide their services under applicable contractual and legal safeguards.
  • Travo personnel and operational partners: authorised staff, contractors, or safety/support partners who need access to verify documents, operate dispatch, resolve a case, pay earnings, or respond to a safety issue.
  • Authorities and other parties: where required by law or lawful process, or where reasonably necessary to protect safety, investigate suspected fraud or unlawful activity, or establish, exercise, or defend legal rights.
  • Business changes: a successor or transaction party if Travo's business or assets are reorganised or transferred, subject to applicable privacy requirements.

We do not sell your personal data. We do not share identity documents with customers as part of an ordinary trip.

7. International processing

Some service providers may store or process information outside Uganda. Where personal data is processed outside Uganda, Travo will apply the safeguards and conditions required by Ugandan data protection law, including appropriate contractual or other protections where required. Contact us if you would like general information about relevant recipient categories or safeguards.

8. Retention

We keep driver account, eligibility, vehicle, location, trip, payout, support, and safety information only for as long as reasonably needed for the purposes described here. This may include the time your account is active and additional periods required for tax, accounting, licensing, insurance, legal compliance, dispute resolution, fraud prevention, and safety investigations. Different record types have different retention periods. When information is no longer required, we take steps to delete it, anonymise it, or securely restrict access, subject to lawful backup and retention requirements.

9. Security

We use reasonable technical and organisational safeguards designed to protect personal data against loss, unauthorised access, alteration, or disclosure. Identity documents and account access are limited to authorised personnel who need them for verification or operations. No internet transmission, device, or storage system can be guaranteed completely secure. Protect your device and sign-in credentials, never share one-time passcodes, and promptly contact support if you suspect account compromise.

10. Your privacy rights

Subject to Uganda's Data Protection and Privacy Act and other applicable law, you may ask us to confirm whether we hold your personal data, access or receive a description of it, correct inaccurate information, request deletion or restriction where permitted, object to certain processing, or withdraw consent where consent is the basis. You may also raise a complaint with Uganda's Personal Data Protection Office (PDPO). A right may be limited where the law permits or requires us to retain or withhold information, for example to protect another person's rights or preserve a legal record.

To make a request, email privacy@travo.ug from the account email or include the phone number linked to your driver account. We may ask for reasonable information to verify your identity and locate the records. We will handle the request under the applicable legal process and time limits. You can request account closure through the app or by contacting support; closing an account does not automatically erase records we are legally required or permitted to keep.

PDPO information: pdpo.go.ug.

11. Automated systems and account reviews

Automated systems may help match trips, estimate arrival or fare details, detect unusual activity, or flag a case for review. A flag is not necessarily a final decision. Where an automated result materially affects your access to the Platform, contact support to request information or a review, subject to applicable law and the need to protect safety, security, and other users.

12. Updates to this policy

We may update this policy as driver services, providers, or legal obligations change. We will update the date above and, where a change is material or notice is required, provide notice through the app, website, or another appropriate channel. The current version is available at this page.
